What is Myotherapy

Myotherapy Myotherapist

Myotherapy is a hands-on therapy in which the soft tissue structures of the body are worked on. It includes assessment, treatment and management of musculoskeletal conditions which may cause myofascial dysfunction and pain thus affecting movement and mobility.

Myofascia is the thin, fibrous sheets of tissue that surround and separate muscles. Ligaments and tendons are comprised of bundled myofascia.

Myotherapists utilise a range of treatment techniques to restore and maintain the normal integrity of the soft tissue structures (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia).

The therapist uses their hands to stroke, knead or compress the tension away, similar to remedial massage therapy. Myotherapists also utilise cupping, dry needling, tapping and rehabilitative exercise depending on the person’s needs. Myotherapy & massage has been practised around the globe by different cultures, throughout the ages as a type of healing.

Not only does it ease and help increase flexibility and mobility, but it also effectively helps reduce the effects of stress, anxiety, and depression to promote states of deep physical and mental relaxation.

It does this by reducing the levels of stress hormones such as cortical & by stimulating the release of endorphins, which are natural pain killers and help to improve and elevate your mood. Massage stimulates the circulation of blood throughout the body, bring oxygen and nutrients into the body’s tissues helping the lymphatic system to discharge waste and toxins. It has a lot of physical advantages as well as emotional, psychological and energetically as well.

Founded on Western medical principles including anatomy, physiology & biomechanics, it is used to rehabilitate and maintain the integrity of the soft tissue structures of the body. It is the integration of a range of therapeutic techniques that make Myotherapy so effective and powerful.

A Massage Therapist or Remedial Massage Therapist uses an extensive variety of distinct styles of massage in their treatments. A Myotherapist is somebody who has studied Massage Therapy or corrective massage and has decided to do the training to improve their abilities so they can provide more to their customers. Myotherapy consists of a range of different techniques that help people to recover from muscle pain, injury & dysfunction.

Massage is only one technique a Myotherapist may use to help their customers. As well as massage there are a wide variety of other techniques that Myotherapists use that includes dry needling. Pain or symptoms due to muscles or fascia is described as myofascial. Myofascial pain is generally not localized or specific, can differ in intensity and may radiate and refer to local as well as the areas of the body.

Benefits of Myotherapy

Myotherapy may be utilised in the treatment of a broad range of physical traumas and for providing respite from knots that build up in the muscles. Myotherapy works on the rule of muscle pressure. Muscle trigger points can cause pain when they’re pressed or touched and there are specific physical points that redirect/refer the pain to other areas of the body.

The benefits of myotherapy can be seen in healing or managing chronic conditions such as arthritis, providing immediate respite from the pain and generating mobility. Stiffness can be reduced and better circulation of the blood within the body organs may result with the help of myotherapy.

Myotherapy has proven results and is often used by athletes for injury prevention as well as chronic suffers from tight sore muscles.
