Description
Pneumatic compression therapy involves the use of compression devices such as Normatec compression pants, designed to improve blood flow, reduce muscle soreness, and aid recovery. While generally safe, there are certain risks associated with this therapy, and it is important that you read and understand these risks before consenting to treatment.
Purpose of the Therapy
The purpose of pneumatic compression therapy is to assist with recovery by improving lymphatic drainage, reducing swelling, and enhancing circulation in the lower limbs. This therapy is commonly used by athletes and individuals with swelling or circulation issues.
Contraindications
Pneumatic compression therapy is not suitable for individuals with the following conditions:
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or history of blood clots
- Severe peripheral vascular disease
- Congestive heart failure
- Severe atherosclerosis or other ischemic vascular diseases
- Open wounds, skin infections, or cellulitis
- Recent surgery or fractures in the area being treated
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Pregnancy (unless approved by a healthcare professional)
If you have any of the above conditions, DO NOT use pneumatic compression without first consulting and obtaining medical clearance from your medical practitioner or specialist.
Potential Risks
Although uncommon, the following risks may occur during or after pneumatic compression therapy:
- Discomfort, bruising, or mild skin irritation
- Temporary numbness or tingling
- Increased blood pressure during use
- Worsening of pre-existing conditions (e.g., undiagnosed DVT)
- Rare complications, such as blood clots or impaired circulation
If you experience pain, excessive swelling, or any unusual symptoms during or after any compression therapy, discontinue use and seek medical attention immediately.
