CEDS Testing at Brunswick Health
Computerised Electrodermal Screening is a clinical device that can be used to screen for system dysfunction by measuring the electrical resistance on the skin’s surface against specific frequencies.
This measurement will involve acupuncture meridians that match these frequencies or has a resistance to these frequencies. When there is a resistance to a specific frequency pertaining to a specific system, there is then a dysfunction in that system
A common use for this tool is to measure inflammatory processes caused by allergies or food intolerances.
Nowadays, many people suffer from allergies. They can be the result of eating bio-incompatible foods over a period of time. Allergic reactions are accumulative, and a visible reaction that may not take place for up to four days. Often people crave the very foods they are allergic to.
Before problems can be diagnosed at a clinical level there are often a number of things that could have gone wrong along the biochemical pathway in the body. For example; food enters the mouth and is chewed then swallowed, it then goes through an acid bath (Hydrochloric Acid) in a mechanically active stomach.
Food then passes into the small intestine where the majority of the digestive process takes place and nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream. From there it goes to the Colon (large intestine) where mostly water is absorbed. Once reabsorption has taken place, it exits the body as waste.
If there is damage to the mucous membranes anywhere along the digestive tract, it can allow undigested food components to cross into the bloodstream. Once these large undigested foreign particles have entered the blood stream the immune system recognises them as a threat and immediately launches a number of defence mechanisms to remove and neutralise them. This creates an overactive immune system and will consequently produce excess antibodies.
These excess antibodies can then rupture mast cells (immune white blood cells) that contain histamine. Excess histamine can cause inflammation anywhere in the body. Once this inflammation accumulates in a certain area, we give that inflamed area a name. In the joints it can cause or aggravate arthritic pains, hence termed arthritis. In the respiratory tract, it can cause inflammation of the sinuses, trigger asthma or produce excess mucous. In the nervous system, it can cause or aggravate headaches, migraines, depression, tiredness and exacerbate ADHD. In the skin, it can cause or aggravate rashes, eczema, psoriasis and hives.
Research has shown that around 98% of disease states have an inflammatory component, which means if we can reduce or illuminate an inflammatory process, most ailments will either subside or disappear completely.
There are many different types of inflammatory reactions. In allergies the two major groups are:
- Allergic Reactions
- Intolerances to Food or Products
Allergic Reactions are really an extreme form of an inflammatory reaction where parts of the body can swell up quickly such as the skin, tongue or throat making it an emergency situation as breathing can be severely compromised. If anyone is suspected of having such a severe reaction, it can be life-threatening hence an ambulance should be called immediately- without hesitation. Naturally, the name of the game is to avoid such traumatic events and in order to avoid, one must understand the origin of this dangerous situation and reduce the odds as much as possible.
Intolerances are a more subtle form of an inflammatory reaction and hence harder to pinpoint and in some ways could be considered as the “silent assassin”, as it slowly destroys your health and wellbeing over time. It is by far the most common out of the two.
Inflammatory reactions are often immediate and can be quite severe. By removing the offending food the person can experience a measure of relief, however, the underlying cause is still there. Many medications, creams and supplements will give symptom relief but the underlying cause remains.
There are a number of tests that determine allergens at a clinical level. Tests only give us information – what we do with that information determines the end result. By removing allergens we can sometimes correct the symptoms, but the underlying cause of the overactive immune system is still there.
Computerised Electrodermal Screening is at a sub-clinical level. It is aimed at finding out what causes the immune system to over-activate. Organs and systems are tested collectively and how we use the information is of extreme importance.
The testing will determine what foods are good to eat, and what foods will trigger an allergic reaction contributing to the overall problem. Don’t assume that all foods are good to eat, an example would be that an unassuming red capsicum can cause havoc, it’s not necessarily always the “usual suspects” that cause all the trouble, as a lot of our patients eat wholesome, organic foods yet still suffer from allergies and intolerances.
Once the offending foods are identified, it is important to avoid these, and to combine this with a closely monitored detox programme to give your body a good “spring clean”. If we can give the immune system a rest and a real chance of working efficiently, all reactive foods will have a reduced impact on the body. Naturally this will take time to correct as it has taken years to get sick so don’t expect a week or two will sort things out….not if you want the job done properly.
Having said that, many people see symptom relief in a few days, while others have taken a few months. Symptom relief does NOT mean that the problem has been corrected, it merely means we are on the right path and if we stay true to our path we will really see an amazing difference within ourselves with everything from higher energy levels, to no bloating, clearer skin, and a clarity of mind that we have not experienced possibly since childhood.
Recovery does depend on where, how much and how many pathways are compromised. It may be necessary to use supplements, creams and medications to give our bodies a “booster shot” to accelerate symptom relief until the immune system corrects and deals with its underlying problems.
Other factors like parasites, viruses, heavy metal poisoning… etc, can impact on the immune system and complicate recovery. As we pollute our environment and live stressful lives these become real threats to our overall health and well-being. Heavy metal contamination can be detected via hair sample testing in addition to the Computerised Electrodermal Screening.
Once our Naturopaths test and identify key health issues, they explain findings and monitor progress via fortnightly reassessments. They makes sure their prescribed treatment protocols have a positive impact and at times may need to change treatment direction as the body unravels its “sickness layers”, a lot like an onion…once you peel the top layer another one is revealed underneath and in some cases it may be in a worse condition than its predecessor!
Those that are dedicated and follow their expert instructions will reap the rewards, and those that are half-hearted and impatient will get out what they put in. So make the commitment and enjoy these life changing results. Our Naturopaths have a reputation of succeeding where others have failed.
If you are sick of being sick, call our Melbourne clinic for a naturopathy consultation on 9380 8099 today, or book online.
