Low Back Surgery is Less Likely if a Chiro is Consulted First.

A study shows Low Back Surgery is less likely if a Chiropractor is consulted first.

The objective of the study was to identify early predictors of low back surgery within 3 years of an occupational back injury.

The study used data collected from medical bills claimed by participants to see if they underwent low back surgery or not.

Looking at 1885 workers, the researchers concluded “Approximately 42.7% of workers who first saw a surgeon had surgery, in contrast to only 1.5% of those who saw a chiropractor.

They concluded there was a very strong association between surgery and the first provider seen for low back injuries.

It certainly has been our experience at Brunswick Health.
In very limited cases surgery is necessary but this is rare rather than common. Low back surgery is highly invasive and carries a certain degree of risk hence should be considered as a last resort, after exhausting all conservative measures such as Chiropractic.

There is a huge difference between 42.7 % & 1.5% indicating that standard medical screening measures as to whether a person is a candidate for low back surgery falls well short of being accurate.

For those that have been advised low back surgery is their only option, exercise your option and seek a second opinion from a Chiropractor.
